Course Description
When discussing the treatment process for substance use addiction including dual-diagnosis, the focus is often on the individual who is suffering from addiction. However, it is important to understand how the family can play a part in the recovery process.
Additionally, the family may experience their own form of recovery because of experiences they’ve had with their loved one suffering from addiction. Understanding how family can support their loved one while also attending to their own needs, by learning how to set boundaries and accessing resources, can impact efficacy of treatment.
This presentation is designed for clinicians who may have limited experience working with addiction and the dynamics that are involved when taking the family into consideration.
Educational Goals
This training with help therapists develop a deeper understanding of addiction, including how to work with clients suffering from addiction and how to engage families in the recovery process.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 strategies that can be used to help clients who may be ambivalent about seeking treatment and how to identify ambivalence.
- Identify 2 potential challenges to working with SUD or dual-diagnosis clients from the perspective of the clinician
- Identify the role of family across cultures and definitions in the recovery process.
