Presented by Erica Thomas, LMFT
Treating Binge Eating with Self-Compassion: A Trauma-Informed Approach offers therapists a practical and research-informed framework for addressing binge eating through the lens of self-compassion. Rooted in the work of Kristin Neff, Paul Gilbert, and trauma-informed care principles, this training explores how binge eating often functions as a coping strategy for underlying emotional pain and shame. Participants will learn how to use self-compassion-based interventions to help clients shift from cycles of self-criticism and secrecy to greater emotional regulation, inner safety, and healing. |

This BBS-required, 3-hour 3.0 CE course covers law and ethics for delivery of telehealth by California LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs, and LEPs, with a focus on client safety and unique considerations for clinical care.
In many ways, providing therapy through Zoom or other online options is similar to working with a client in person – except when the technology glitches out, or the client is in crisis. Are you prepared for these situations? This course offers specific guidance on the legal requirements and practical considerations for providing therapy by telehealth in California, including informed consent, assessing appropriateness for telehealth, telehealth across state lines, HIPAA and confidentiality, and documentation. You’ll learn about important safety plans that should be prepared for each client, along with suggestions for implementing a simple technology failure protocol. The focus is on best practices for two-way video therapy conducted on Zoom or other platforms, though all telehealth modalities are discussed.
Members - you can access recordings of our zoom events from 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021 in our new on-demand library which has been migrated over to Thinkific (https://recamft.thinkific.com/).

![]() At the Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to the well being of young people and their families. Over the past several years, we have seen firsthand the growing need for mental health services in our community. Families are facing more stressors than ever before ranging from economic challenges to academic pressures and social isolation, and many do not have access to affordable or culturally responsive support. Our Mental Health Program was created in direct response to these community needs. Through partnerships with dedicated therapists and mental health professionals, the Club has been able to offer therapy sessions and support groups at no cost to families. These services have provided youth with a safe and supportive environment to process emotions, build resilience, and learn healthy coping strategies. Now, as the needs of our community continue to grow, we are excited to expand the program to support not only youth but entire families. The expansion of our Family Wellness program focuses on bringing families together, strengthening relationships, and equipping caregivers with the tools they need to support their children’s emotional health. We know that when parents, guardians, and children are supported as a unit, the entire household benefits. That is why we are inviting therapists to partner with us in offering the following services:
By expanding our programming in these ways, we are creating opportunities for families to access resources that would otherwise be out of reach due to cost or availability. Just as importantly, we are ensuring that youth in Sonoma Valley have the support they need both inside and outside the clubhouse. We know that this work cannot be done alone. That is why we are reaching out to organizations and clinicians who share our commitment to serving vulnerable populations. By working together, we can ensure that Sonoma Valley families, particularly those from underserved or marginalized backgrounds, have access to quality mental health support that strengthens both individuals and the community as a whole. At the Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley, our vision is simple yet powerful: to empower young people and their families to thrive. With the support of compassionate clinicians and community partners, we can continue to build a future where every child and every family has the tools to navigate challenges, grow stronger, and succeed together. ![]() Natalie Goddard, AMFT, is the Director of Mental Health Services at Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley. How RECAMFT Changed My Life
by Laura Strom, PsyD, LMFT
RECAMFT Secretary
New to Sonoma county, in September 2012 I braved my way into my first RECAMFT meeting. I was nervous. I needed to find an office to sublet I could afford. I had just finished an intensive course in sandplay, and hoped to find someone who shared this modality, and would sublet to me.
The first member I met was Cynthia Halliday. She approached me with a big smile and her hand out. I shook it, and told her the kind of office sublet I was seeking. She told me she had an office with sandplay, and could consider subletting it. She was warm and welcoming. I was ecstatic! This was the beginning of a long friendship, sharing an office space together.
After such a great start, of course, I came back to the monthly meetings. In December I volunteered to serve as the hospitality chair, and bring the snacks for the meetings in 2013. After the meeting Gail Van Buuren invited me to attend the next Board meeting. She said my offer to volunteer made me part of the team. So, I went the following week.
At the time Board meetings were held in the home of Judith Peletz who always made homemade breads, and served tea which smelled delicious. The people who attended sat in a circle, and began each meeting with silent meditation. The space felt sacred. I was hooked! (The current Board meetings are held on Zoom and begin with each person checking in about how they are doing).
Lani Lee was the 2013 President, and there was no President Elect. She was pregnant, and going out on maternity leave in June. In April after four months of Lani asking for a President Elect volunteer, I told the Board I thought if they would help me, I could volunteer to do this job. At the May members meeting I was elected President Elect. In June Lani went out on leave and I became the Acting President for the next three months.
Little did I know I would soon be organizing a protest of a very unpopular action taken by the CAMFT Board which led to me running for President of CAMFT. In March 2014 as RECAMFT’s President, I was elected to CAMFT’s Board of Directors and became the most popularly elected President Elect in CAMFT’s history, winning in a landslide. I served the CAMFT Board for three years as its President Elect, President and Past President.
Dr. Bob Casanova ran with me and was elected as a Director at Large to the CAMFT Board. He and I became close friends. Bob has always had my back and has been one of the greatest mentors of my lifetime. He served the Board much longer than me, becoming CAMFT’s 2017-18 President.
On the CAMFT Board I had the opportunity to visit Washington, DC, and do lobbying for LMFTs in the halls of Congress with the Board. We met with Nancy Pelosi. We advocated for the Veterans Administration to include LMFTs as providers. What a thrill when the VA announced we would be included in the following years.
The American Medical Association, Texas Branch, attacked the LMFTs there, saying they could not diagnose! Our CAMFT Board voted to create an Amicus Brief to defend the rights of LMFTs to diagnose and provide subsequent treatment, emphasizing our education and training. I learned turf wars in our industry were real.
The CAMFT Board was asked to weigh in on the topic of assisted suicide. We decided to survey our members to see what their opinions were before deciding. Some of the most important decisions which affect our profession take place around the CAMFT Board table.
October is the month where both RECAMFT and CAMFT put out a call for Committee and Board volunteers. Nearly all CAMFT Board members start out as members of a CAMFT chapter Board. I started out as the hospitality volunteer at RECAMFT and it led to me becoming the 2015-16 President of CAMFT. Please consider the magical ways in which volunteering for our profession could touch and transform your life. We need you!
